There are approximately fifty major volunteers that make up the core team to protect our lake. However; to date, over a thousand people have signed protesting AGL's intrusion into Lake Peigneur.
Four people have written statements in support of AGL developing natural gas salt caverns. One, a lawyer, that represented AGL at our first public meeting. Two living in locations distant from the lake. Most importantly, the three not employed by AGL did not have all the facts.
Nationally, we hear and read that prices for natural gas will be lower than all other energy sources because of the surplus of natural gas. That alone makes everyone in the United States happy.
Our issue is simple, AGL can offer the same product to the United States but without placing five thousand lives at risk or using our drinking water which is already depleted due to subsidence and drought.
AGL has the CHOICE to provide natural gas by relocating to unpopulated areas. They choose not to because THEY want to save money. AGL is a limited liability company that, in the event of catstrophe, or issues such as residents needing to deep deeper wells due to water shortage, AGL does not have any responsibility to us.
In 2005 thirty natural gas storage caverns existed, ten had varios accidents associated with their facility. The most important issue to remember as AGL propogates how much revenue they may bring to our state, and remember the reason they lost their lease is because they didn't pay their bills. AGL has the choice to be ethical, do what is morally right and not risk lives, environment or our water.
Please join us, write us, even if just to sign your name and say we support you. If you would like more information or to come to our meetings, please contact us.

AGL - sorry, not safe Thursday, September 21, 2006 11:11 AM CDT I just saw the video about the 1980 Lake Peigneur disaster.
After watching the huge whirlpool, I could only come to one conclusion of the present day plans by AGL to build natural gas storage domes - Tim Goodson, AGL's managing director of environmental health and safety, as well as all the other money hungry grubbers at AGL, are completely insane.
There can be no other explanation. Stunned Peigneur resident not buying the rhetoric Wednesday, September 20, 2006 12:40 PM CDT The Daily Iberian
I don't believe a word AGL's representatives said in their Sunday article.
They are blatantly ignoring the obvious and realistic dangers of living near (literally on top of, for us Lake Peigneur residents) huge caverns of highly pressurized natural gas. They are ignoring it because they don't have to live with it.
They'll be in their corporate office way over in Houston while cavern construction destroys the lake waters and thus the wildlife. They'll be reaping corporate profits from those caverns while myself, my 6-year old niece and 77-year old grandmother eat, live and breathe everyday just a couple hundred feet away from their wellheads, which cap the explosive gas. Here are three of AGL's arguments I find ridiculous:
-Lake Peigneur is the only option; caverns offshore can't withstand the Gulf's hurricanes.
Our oil and gas industry survived the worst of the worst last year and they're still kickin'. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are other companies storing natural gas off of the coast. Why doesn't AGL find out how those guys pulled it off?
-The 6.6 Richter Scale earthquake in the Gulf on September 10, 2006, was rare.
According to the US Geological Survey website, there was an earthquake in the Gulf on February 10, 2006, measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale (http://earthquake.usgs.gov). Two earthquakes in the same year doesn't make it "rare" in my book. If those earthquakes begin to happen closer to us, I believe that the pipes connected to the current caverns will sheer and release the gas inside. Add a spark and you have a catastrophe. -They are sympathetic to the residents' concerns.
Then why are they still here, and why are they suing the State of Louisiana to muscle their way back into Lake Peigneur?
My fellow citizens, they are suing your State, they are suing your Natural Resources Department, they are suing you because they contend they have the "right" to use your state's natural resources for their business interests. They are holding their corporate profits at a higher priority level than your life.
I welcome you to visit www.savelakepeigneur.org to help us defend our right to live in safety.

Residents lose property value, home September 20, 2006 The Daily Advertiser AGL Resources claims that 69 workers will make $5.2 million on this (Lake Peigneur) project.
What happens to the 69 residents who live in the area with all the noise the rig men make on the PA system, 24/7, screaming, fussing, swearing, blowing the horn? We lose the value of property and home.
We lose the security of enjoying our lake and the possibility of an accident, maybe an explosion. This is a populated area. It was a quite peaceful place. Money can't buy or replace what we had before AGL started this project. I'm upset that all this commotion drove out my son and his expecting wife. She had to put up with the workers on the project's noise every night. It's costing them to move and start all over again.
I'm not impressed with what just 69 people will make out of this deal because I'm losing everything because of this deal. My family! My peaceful place!

Let's hear the options Tuesday, September 19, 2006 11:25 AM CDT The Daily Iberian As a concerned citizen who resides in view of Lake Peigneur, I would like to express my opinion regarding AGL and their desire to store gas at Jefferson Island.
I understand this country's thirst for energy and the need to supply it, however, I am sure there are other options open to AGL that would not require desroying an entire eco-system and ruining one of the best little fishing holes in this part of the state.
I have enjoyed countless hours catching redfish, flounder, blue channel catfish and several other species in the very lake that AGL plans to destroy possibly for the next decade. If AGL is allowed to dredge the lake, it will bring to the surface years of pollution deposited by previous oil exploration. The impact of this could create disasterous effects all the way through Delcambre canal and into the small bayous and streams that connect to it. Try to imagine the smell of dead fish in every drainage canal that connects to Lake Peigneur. I know this sounds extreme but it is very possible due to the tidal flow. If there is a way for AGL to prevent the death of Lake Peigneur during the construction of the proposed storage facility, I think everyone in the area that would be affected has the right to here it.
Brian Morton Halt expansion of Jefferson Island plant September 18, 2006 The Daily Advertiser I am writing in response to AGL Resources, Inc.'s efforts to expand the Jefferson Island Storage and Hub plant. As a resident of the area, I am vastly concerned with these efforts and can't express enough how strongly I feel in not allowing this expansion to take place. It is a huge danger to the area and its residents, and if there were to be an accident of some sort like that of the 1980 salt mine disaster that devastated Lake Peigneur and the acres of land surrounding it, it would be a great devastation for the people and the land. In my opinion, it should be quite apparent that there simply is no room for risk taking in such a matter when it involves peoples' lives! There is no economic benefit that could possibly outweigh the value of life should an accident occur. I urge AGL to bring such efforts to a halt! Please! Misti Moreaux, Lafayette Save Lake Peigneur!

Misti Moreaux, New Iberia Study the lake issue Friday, September 8, 2006 1:24 PM CDT The Daily Iberian RE: AGL Resources construction at Jefferson Island Storage & Hub Plant ... I am a concerned citizen of New Iberia.
I live near Lake Peigneur and I use the lake for boat riding. I am afraid of a potential disastrous circumstance to the Chicot Aquifer. AGL employees aren't concerned like the New Iberia residents because not one employee lives near the lake. If a disaster were to occur it wouldn't affect their employees.
I think the public of New Iberia needs to be alerted of what is taking place at Lake Peigneur. This is not a game it is our water we are talking about and the safety of our people. Please help to alert the public of the possible effects that could take place if this is to pass. Concerned citizen of New Iberia Monday, July 31, 2006 12:45 PM CDT The Daily Iberian I live on the lake near the canal entrance. AGL cannot guarantee that all or some of our fears will not come true. I don't think anyone wants to take that risk.
We all work really hard for a wonderful place to live and have had to rebuild a second time, I personally, do not want to go through another disaster when it can be avoided. AGL does not seem to care about the risks. AGL wants the residents to think they want to be a good neighbor by helping with money for schools and VFD's. One way they could have proven to be a good neighbor is to have had all the core testing done of the lake to prove that the dredging will not contaminate the lake. They must be afraid of the results!!!!!!
